Amended Tax Returns Can Now Be Electronically Filed
It’s official. Taxpayers can now submit amended tax returns (Form 1040-X) electronically. Achieving this milestone comes after years of effort by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to streamline the process of filing an amended return, making it quicker while minimizing errors normally associated with manually completing the form.
Approximately, 3 million Forms 1040-X are filed by taxpayers each year. Initially, only tax-year 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically. Improvements are expected in the future.
